Come check out what a premier Ottawa martial arts studio has to offer! And hey, while you’re here, why not read below to find out more about Kun Khmer (Muay Thai Kickboxing) and its history.
HISTORY OF KUN KHMER (MUAY THAI KICKBOXING)
Muay Thai is a specific type of thai kickboxing that is also known as the science of eight limbs. Kun Khmer and Muay Thai are the national sports of tropical Cambodia and Thailand. As a matter of fact, that is where the sport was taken from the streets to the world stage. Its proven effectiveness is the reason why this sport is practiced worldwide and is known by almost everyone in the martial arts community! In fact, it has become a staple in Mixed Martial Arts today (such as UFC). Characterized by using a mix of offensive striking and defensive techniques, this martial art is highly effective at long and medium ranges and in stand-up grappling (also called the clinch).
What’s the clinch you ask?
It’s a close-range grappling technique commonly used in Kun Khmer (Muay Thai Kickboxing). Opponents battle for the dominant position with short range strikes by way of elbows and knees to wear down or finish an opponent. If this sounds complicated, don’t worry, we break it down so it is very easy to understand and practice yourself – you’ll be surprised how quickly you could be excelling at it!
We accept all skill levels in our classes, from low to high there’s a class tailored to your experience or lack thereof.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN A KUN KHMER OR MUAY THAI KICKBOXING CLASS
At Tina Takashi Martial Arts and Fitness, our classes are inclusive, fun and we guarantee you’ll leave feeling like you just had an excellent work out! When it comes to Kun Khmer or Muay Thai, kickboxing workouts include sport-specific drills like calisthenics, bag work, pad work, intense conditioning and specific drills to sharpen the eight weapons (remember the science of eight limbs). The reason we practice many of these activities is so that our bodies become trained to use the muscles when we need them for defensive or offensive moves. In Kun Khmer or Muay Thai kickboxing, your shoulders, arms and legs will be used to stop your opponent from executing his techniques. This can be a pretty empowering experience!
