SPORT SAMBO

In 1892 the Tsar government brought over a ju jutsu master named Hirose Takeo. Takeo, one of the best alumni of the Kodokan Judo school, taught officers of the Russian General Staff. The word “sambo” is derived from the word combination “unarmed self-defense ”(SAMozaschita Bez Oruzhiya” in Russian). Vasily Oshchepkov and V.A. Spiridonov are credited as founders of sambo, along with A. Kharlampiev who systematized the techniques and summarized the terminology. Professor Oshenchepkov, a second degree black belt of Judo under Jigoro Kano, also studied Karate in Japan for ten years before returning to Russia. Today, the best known Sambo competitor, Fedor Emelianenko, is widely known as the best mixed martial artist of all time.

Sambo practitioners are known for takedowns that combine wrestling and judo manoeuvres, ground control skills, and leg locks. Sambo is for all-round, harmonious personal development. Sambo can be a great life skills enhancer for all types of activity (educational, professional, everyday) as well as a vehicle to achieve improved mastery of a sport. Our dojo offers separate classes for teens and adult, sport sambo and combat sambo.
